An ikea Hyllis Shelf gets a Sexy Makeover

So I am completely lacking in storage in my new little house, and it seems many necessary, yet entirely unattractive, "house parts" are in really terrible locations. For example, the electrical panel is HUGE and placed smack in the middle of my office nook wall (I'll post pictures of that someday when my desk is not covered in drawings and is styled exquisitely). The return vent for the air conditioning unit is placed in the middle of the wall in the living room, and it's the first thing one sees when entering through the front door. It's completely ridiculous, and there's nothing I can do about it but try to camouflage these unsightly  parts as best I can. My solution to hiding the return vent, and to my storage dilemma, was to find an open-backed shelf (apparently, return vents are not supposed to be covered, hence the open backed shelf). Ikea is the best source for durable, yet very inexpensive shelves, so here's a look at the before and after of the Ikea Hyllis shelf that I recently finished. Forgive my terrible photography skills, but doesn't it look great in gold? I think it' sexy and looks like I paid way more than the $14 I really paid!
